State geometry packages for research.

DaedalMap packages the USA geometry spine as citable state datasets: state, county, tract, block group, and block shapes in one release.

The geometry package

Each package is a state-level administrative geometry release. The combined parquet carries admin 1 through admin 5 where the full stack is available: state or territory, counties or county equivalents, Census tracts, block groups, and blocks.

The package is separate from the runtime layout. DaedalMap keeps the serving files split for map and query performance, then writes a derived research package for download, citation, and archival mirrors.

Why it exists

These layers are often scattered across separate portals, file formats, vintage years, and naming systems. DaedalMap keeps the stack together under one location model, with source notes, license notes, checksums, and a stable package manifest.

Researchers can download the parquet release, inspect the manifest, cite the record, and join their own data against the same loc_id spine used by DaedalMap packs.

Package contents

  • geometry_admin_1_5.parquet. One combined table with geometry, hierarchy fields, source layer, and upstream license fields.
  • metadata.json. Package identity, coverage, source URLs, release policy, and format notes.
  • manifest.json. File sizes, checksums, package id, and downloadable prefix.
  • README.md. Human-readable summary for the state release.
  • LICENSE.txt. Upstream attribution and redistribution notes.

Coverage

Full-depth state packages require all five levels. Seven states are ready for full admin 1-5 export: California, Delaware, Maryland, New York, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

The remaining states and territories have admin 1 through admin 4 in the local geometry stack and need admin 5 block processing before they become full-depth package releases.

Sources and licenses

The deep USA layers are derived from U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line geometry. The admin spine includes geoBoundaries gbOpen lineage for the broader boundary model. Public bulk downloads stay free where upstream terms permit. Hosted MCP and API access are a paid convenience lane.

Download and citation path

DaedalMap hosts package artifacts under the public downloadable lane and mirrors citation records through academic repositories. The preferred pattern is a DaedalMap download page, a Zenodo DOI record, and discovery mirrors on Kaggle or other data communities when useful.
