Show the source.
State the coverage.

Every maintained pack describes who made it, what it contains, where and when it applies, and the limits of its source data.

Source data sheets

A source data sheet is the public record behind a pack. It names the original publisher, the pack maintainer, and the method used to clean, merge, or model the data. Users can see the update date, time range, main fields, license, and caveats before relying on a result.

  • Pack name and short summary
  • Original publisher, source links, maintainer, and contributor credit
  • Methodology, update cadence, and last update
  • Time range, geographic coverage, and main metrics or fields
  • License, citation, known caveats, and pack history

Country coverage

Global packs declare coverage against the shared common_countries reference list instead of repeating every country code in each source sheet. The list contains 200 sovereign states. A companion commonly_missing list contains 52 territories and special regions that many upstream datasets omit.

Each source records the exceptions in its geographic_coverage object:

  • type: global, country, or regional.
  • common_count: how many common countries are included.
  • common_missing: common countries absent from this source.
  • uncommonly_included: territories and special regions that the source adds.

actual coverage = common_countries − common_missing + uncommonly_included

For example, a source with all 200 common countries and 17 additional territories covers 217 country-level regions. Its sheet can state those 17 additions rather than list all 217 codes.

Country and regional packs

A country pack declares its ISO3 country code and the administrative levels carrying data. A regional pack declares the country and the region inside it. The catalog can then show a short coverage label without treating a regional source as global.

Use the pack catalog for a pack's published source, dates, fields, and coverage. The open engine keeps the country reference lists with its ISO codes and aliases under mapmover/reference/.
